چکیده

We study the nondeterministic state complexity of Boolean operations on regular languages of nested words. For union and intersection we obtain matching upper and lower bounds. For complementation of a nondeterministic nested word automaton with n states we establish a lower boundΩ( √ n!) that is significantly worse than the exponential lower bound for ordinary nondeterministic finite automata (NFA). We develop techniques to prove lower bounds for the size of nondeterministic nested word automata that extend the known techniques used for NFAs. © 2009 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A Uniformization Theorem for Nested Word to Word Transductions

We study the class of relations implemented by nested word to word transducers (also known as visibly pushdown transducers). We show that any such relation can be uniformized by a functional relation from the same class, implemented by an unambiguous transducer. We give an exponential upper bound on the state complexity of the uniformization, improving a previous doubly exponential upper bound....

Alternation Elimination for Automata over Nested Words

This paper presents constructions for translating alternating automata into nondeterministic nested-word automata (NWAs). With these alternation-elimination constructions at hand, we straightforwardly obtain translations from various temporal logics over nested words from the literature like CaRet and μNWTL, and extensions thereof to NWAs, which correct, simplify, improve, and generalize the pr...

Descriptional complexity of unambiguous input-driven pushdown automata

It is known that a nondeterministic input-driven pushdown automaton (IDPDA) (a.k.a. visibly pushdown automaton; a.k.a. nested word automaton) of size n can be transformed to an equvalent deterministic automaton of size 2 2) (B. von Braunmühl, R. Verbeek, “Input-driven languages are recognized in log n space”, FCT 1983), and that this size is necessary in the worst case (R. Alur, P. Madhusudan, ...

Results on the Average State and Transition Complexity of Finite Automata Accepting Finite Languages (Extended Abstract)

The study of descriptional complexity issues for finite automata dates back to the mid 1950’s. One of the earliest results is that deterministic and nondeterministic finite automata are computationally equivalent, and that nondeterministic finite automata can offer exponential state savings compared to deterministic ones, see [11]—by the powerset construction one increases the number of states ...

Results on the Average State and Transition Complexity of Finite Automata Accepting Finite Languages

We investigate the average-case state and transition complexity of deterministic and nondeterministic finite automata, when choosing a finite language of given maximum word length n uniformly at random. The case where all words are of equal length is also taken into account. It is shown that almost all deterministic finite automata accepting finite languages over a binary input alphabet have st...
